Wars and destruction would seem to be more of a product of men who think that to love onself above all else is a virtue, as you claim.
The needs or desires of others or their persons "don't count" so why not kill them to get what you want?

But back to faith and reason. These are not mutually exclusive paths.
Very learned men for a long time have realized there are limititations to what can be known throught the physical senses. You preclude the existence of any higher reality simply because you BELIEVE there is none. This is inconsistent. You cannot test whether it is true or false, but you categorically deny the possibility. You think, but you don't realize your own limitations. You have FAITH in your own ability to reason, without considering the source of your ability to think -- whatever you might believe it to be. If a higher reality exists and you are found to be wrong, what good will YOUR faith be?
