Humidity is the major facilitator of static. If its low, watch out . If its above 50% then less likely. Don't walk on rugs, wear nylon or wool. Use common sense.

Static is a killer though. Biggest problem is that it may just weaken a component for a later fail. You be surprised what the internals of static damage looks like.

Use care with CPU, RAM and HDs when installing/touching. Try to use electric outlet that is 3 prong and really has ground wire run. Static wrist strap and mat isn't required but isn't bad idea or practice either.
