To all:

I read with some amusement the recent discussion regarding a CDMA/GSM handset. Recall that the recent W-CDMA deal between Lucent/Philips and Qualcomm included a cross-licensing agreement which gave QC access to LU/PHG GSM patents on a non-royalty bearing basis. Also remember that QC is developing a CDMA air-interface overlay for the GSM networks. Since such an overlay would represent an island of sanity (oops), I mean CDMA, in a sea of GSM, one could safely presume that a CDMA/GSM handset would be a marketing prerequisite so that customers could roam seamlessly.

I believe that QC is developing such a handset, but is being careful not to infringe on anybody's IPR. Unlike CDMA, where virtually anyone can get into the game by purchasing an IS-95 license from QC, the GSM community has consciously and fastidiously erected an IPR fortress by spreading patents across a broad Eurocentric contingent. I expect that QC will resolve this problem and I expect the company to have a CDMA/GSM phone.

Best regards,

Gregg
