Notice to News Media Concerning Billion-Dollar Increase to
First-Class Mail Rates Now Before the Postal Service Board
of Governors

June 1, 1998

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge
Corporation -- Coalition to Make Our First Class Mail
FIRST CLASS issued the following statement on Friday
concerning the billion-dollar increase to first-class mail
rates now before the Postal Service Board of Governors:

"The Postal Service Board of Governors will be meeting
in Washington DC this Monday and Tuesday, June 1-2.
That meeting is the first opportunity for the board to
take final action on their plan to increase first-class mail
rates by a billion dollars -- the plan would increase
stamp prices to 33-cents,every extra penny is another
billion dollars in revenue to the Postal Service
.

"Our coalition has been informed by the governors'
office that the board is expected to discuss the plan at
Monday's closed-door session but is not expected to
take any action at this meeting. Should we hear of a
change in plans or be surprised by an announcement at
Tuesday's public meeting we will share that with you.

"The board's next scheduled meeting is June 29-30 in
Washington DC.

"Our coalition -- with more than 200-member
organizations representing five million Americans --
feels that in light of a fourth year of record profits at the
Postal Service no rate hike is necessary or justified. We
are calling on the governors to reject any first class rate
hike."
