Boy I get tired of posting this. Merced is for $20K+ machines.

In the same sense that the P6 was for high end, 20K+ machines.

Merced will be released initially for high end machines but it is expected to move into the lower end within two-three years of release.

Merced is to debut at about 600 Mhz 64bit. Apple doesn't have anything to compare with this.

Wow, wow hold on a second. By the time Merced is released in mid-2000 there will be Power PC processors running at 600-700Mhz. I can guarantee you that.

Merced is simply the Intel-HP entry into this market and is significant because Intel has never played here before.

If you read the early press releases from Intel, Merced is meant to replace the x86 architecture, in fact its original name was P7. This is the main reason why x86 compatibility was of such importance (and a cause of large delays in production).

Now Intel is spin doctoring its latest delays on shipping dates. But anyone can see through those...
