Another problem is that the version of NT native to Alpha is different from the version native to X86, and Merced will be backward compatible with X86, not Alpha. Since Merced was mainly for use running NT, this raises all kinds of compatibility issues. Just another reason why Intel is very unlikely to seriously follow an Alpha strategy, even in the interim while Merced is being made ready.
