Internet Integration: A Really Necessary Innovation or Just a Marketing Dept. Trick-Baby?

RE: Microsoft "Word 98 for the Mac has a surprising (and somewhat mysterious) feature: With an Internet connection, the program automatically scans for Word updates, notifying the user when it finds one. It now is finding the "Word 98 Internet Assistant AutoUpdate," which updates HTML file converters and templates." MacInTouch, June 2, 1998

So, Microsoft does seem to be AWARE that an Operating System need not "Integrate" the internet in order to incorporate its functionality. There seems to be viable alternatives to co-opting internet access on a platform-wide basis. Software programs are clearly able to function independently at this level, if permitted to do so.

PS: My income tax preparation software asked me if it could search on the internet to see if there were any recent updates to itself. I was NOT asked for any details on my browser or type of internet connection. I clicked "Yes" to its question, and it automatically connected & searched. (It found some updates to various functions such as most recent mailing addresses, etc., which it automatically appended to itself.)

The ease and depth to which the internet is already integrated into the computing experience raises questions in my mind about Microsoft's technical claims and marketing intentions. Is internet integration by Microsoft into its OS the only viable path to the future? HR
