OK, here are some PC sales stats from Gartner Group's Dataquest, some of which may surprise people:
Compaq: #1 in US, #1 Worldwide, had 17.1% market share in US, 12.5% Worldwide for Q1 1998, up from 13.3% US and 10.2% Worldwide in Q1 1997.
Dell: #2 in US, #3 Worldwide, had 11.7% market share in US, 7.3% Worldwide in Q1 1998, up from 8.3% US and 5.0% Worldwide in Q1 1997.

Unfortunately, I don't have the numbers for Q4 1997, but I know that Compaq definitely did not have more than 17.1% share of the US PC market during that time. Ergo, Compaq's market share has not fallen. Hope this helped. By the way, I think you may be right about IBM, its worldwide market share apparantly dropped from Q1 1997 to Q1 1998.
