I read the same report Zolt did. It's an SAE technical paper given in support of the government funded "supercar" program. Contact SAE at 412-776-4841 and ask for report # 960243.

Basically, a natural gas vehicle which gets 80 mpg would be a competitive application for carbon fiber against steel and aluminum at $7.50/lb.

From my viewpoint, when do you really think this type of vehicle will be seen in the market - the government says sometime towards the end of the next decade. Not exactly the time to go out and build carbon fiber plants.

The report also goes on to say that <<the other materials industries are not standing still. The American Iron and Steel Industry is well along in its efforts to develop an Ultra Light Steel Auto Body (ULSAB). The Aluminum Association has also been active on a number of programs, the most notable of which is the Audi A8 aluminum space frame>>

If ZOLT is counting on the auto industry to buy up his production, I think he has a while to wait - they won't buy 17 million pounds in 1998.

Best of luck.
Flyguy.
