(Reuters) - NEC Corp.'s NEC Electronics Inc. unit says it will spend $1.4 billion to build an advanced semiconductor plant in Roseville, Calif., which will create 700 jobs and begin operation in 2002. The Japanese company unit said it will make high-performance multimedia chips, system-on-a-chip processors and 256-megabit and 1-gigabit dynamic random access memory, or DRAM, chips. The new plant will be next to an NEC Electronics plan in Roseville, which is about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento. The company plans to spend the $1.4 billion over four years. Santa Clara, Calif.-based NEC Electronics makes an extensive line of semiconductors and components. Steve
