Sam, I also was influenced by The Little Engine That Could. "I think I can, I think I can" is very motivating. I still remember all the pictures in the book!!

I did not have anyone in my life who scared me about Hell. Maybe in those fiery Baptist sermons when I was on my grandmother's lap the preacher was saying that, but I don't think I absorbed much. You have my sympathies, though. I don't think fear is a good way to teach children anything.

My husband was constantly told by the priests that he was bad and stupid. Things in Ireland have changed a little now, but back then children were beaten for every small thing they did wrong at school, including forgetting a fact. It is amazing to me that anyone learned anything. It sounds more like a torture chamber than a school. My husband had to have years of very extensive psychotherapy to recover just part of his self-esteem. He will never be as whole as if he did not attend Catholic school.
