Daniel -- You've misunderstood. What I wrote was: Do you think that this country would have flourished as it has under any other government (all else being equal)? The "all else being equal" was in the sentence to hypothetically compare how everything but government might have done in the environments created by alternate governments.

Or, by way of an apt analogy, our parasites were less enervating than the parasites our our enemies

This shows a total lack of appreciation for conditions elsewhere in the world.

Giving government credit for this success is like saying that the New York Yankee dynasty was due to the fact that they had better batboys, concessionaires, security guards and ground crew than other teams.

Do you really think this is a valid analogy?
