ADSL[100] Forum Gathers Steam/ Nov.11
The ADSL[100] Forum, an industry group formed to develop standards for asymmetrical digital subscriber line technology, said recently it has accelerated its work on ADSL[100] technical standards. The forum said it has broken its technical committee into seven focused groups working to ensure interoperability of ADSL[100] with other data services when commercial ADSL[100] services become available early next year.

ADSL[100] Inaccuracy Report Consumer acceptance and application demand for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line services continue to grow at a meteoric pace. Based on the success of our initial ADSL[100] trials and our plans to conduct more during the next several months, we're confident ADSL[100] is on pace to becoming a "must have" service for people who want to revolutionize the way they work and play.
Your front page article (Emerging Technologies, "ADSL's[100] Copper Pipe Dream," CommWeek, Oct. 21) took GTE Corp. and the industry several steps backward when it inaccurately reported on reconditioning requirements.
Contrary to the article, GTE in its first two trials in North Texas and Redmond, Wash., has never installed a new outside copper plant; we have used the existing outside copper infrastructure.
What we've done, in some cases, is rewire the inside home wire at the customer's premise to comply with recommendations provided by the ADSL[100] Forum. The cost and regulatory differences between upgrading an outside plant vs. running a new wire from the customer's personal computer and the network interface are enormous. The misunderstanding the article painted of this point is a disservice to the success of our early ADSL[100] work.
Let me clarify pricing. The article included only one range; we anticipate offering ADSL[100] at $40 to $100 per month, depending on class of service, or amount of dedicated bandwidth, provided.
We know the public wants an easy-to-use, easy-to-install, high-speed data service. The answer, for many, is ADSL[100], and we anticipate offering it in selected markets in the first half of 1997, with aggressive expansion in the following years.
