Jeff,

Here is a different viewpoint on the government's anti-trust moves against Microsoft and Intel.

When Standard Oil was broken up, Rockefeller got a proportional number of shares (to what he had in SO) for each of the 17 new companies. Within a year of the break-up, his net worth had tripled to something like 900 million, because of the growth of the smaller co's. I wonder how he felt then about the breakup.

When ATT was broken up, the baby bells seemed to do quite well on their own, after struggling to get their feet on the ground. Presumably (I really don't know), people that held shares in the parent co. were able to profit from the growth of the offspring. Imagine ATT still in control of the entire telephone industry...it makes me shudder.

The point is, if a real monopoly is broken up, it may signal a new growth phase for that particular industry. I really don't think Intel is a monopoly (else why is there such a glut of processors?), but I think Microsoft is pretty close to the edge.

Just some thoughts.

Len
