Thanks, Ray, all of that is very helpful in understanding all the influences on Muslims. One of my girlfriends is an Iranian Muslim, but she lives in San Francisco and is very modern. Her husband is a scientist, but she works part-time also, even though they have three very little girls. I do know that she contributes her income to the household. I suspect that just like every country's leadership affects how Muslims live there, there is some adjustment by generation as well. America, in particular, seems to have a liberalizing influence on almost everyone (except the conservative Christians)!

One thing I have noticed is that some people here want to convert. Is the number of Muslims in the world growing fairly rapidly?
