TOKYO (Nikkei/Dow Jones)--Shares of Tokyo
Electron Ltd. (J.TKE or 8035) are sharply higher at
midday Wednesday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on
news of a technical advance likely to boost the fortunes
of the trader of semiconductor manufacturing
equipment, traders said.

At the midday break, Tokyo Electron shares are up
Y210, or 5.0%, at Y4,450, after staying bid-only for the
first 50 minutes of trading. Morning volume came to
708,000 shares.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Wednesday
morning edition that a research group at Tohoku
University has developed a semiconductor
manufacturing system which will cut the cost of making
microchips by more than 90%

The business daily reported that the research group, in
cooperation with Tokyo Electron, is proceeding with the
study to put the new manufacturing system to practical
use as early as the spring of 1999.
