Well now that it's apparent that TLAB holders will be the proud owners of one of the finest start-ups in recent memory, I feel obligated to clear one thing up.

But Ciena has seen some trouble lately. Lucent Technologies Inc.,the big equipment maker spun off from AT&T Corp., recently announced a capacity-boosting system that provides far more bandwidth than Ciena's current line, though Ciena claims it is close to topping Lucent's new systems.

This statement gives one the impression that LU is ahead of CIEN in the DWDM race. This is totally false. CIEN has the highest capacity DWDM on the market. The aforementioned LU offering isn't even out on the market yet. It is total vaporware. LU announced their new system months ago but admitted their 80 channel DWDM wouldn't be available until the end of the year. CIEN has 40 channel product that is scalable to 96 channel shipping RIGHT NOW. In fact Sprint placed a $100 million order for the new Multiwave 4000 almost 2 months ago. This is the same Sprint that made the huge ION announcement yesterday folks. Meanwhile LU is still offering 16 channel retro DWDM. Also, don't forget C&W just bought MCI's internet network. C&W is a customer of CIEN as well.

TLAB and CIEN are two of my absolute favorites (see my profile) and now I'm glad that I don't have to place bets on both companies. I can just buy the one entity.
