"Automated Thin-Layer Slide Preparation. Conventional Pap smears are prepared by wiping the collection instrument across a glass slide. By contrast, to prepare thin-layer slides, clinicians rinse the instrument in a vial of liquid preservative, which is then sent to the laboratory where the cells are extracted and placed evenly on slides by automated equipment. The system appears to improve specimen quality in reliminary tests, Solomon said, and that improved quality may reduce the number of ASCUS diagnoses. Both Roche Image Analysis Systems (Elon College, N.C.) and Cytyc Corporation (Marlborough, Mass.) are developing automated slide preparation methods."
