Rainmaker Digital Pictures Corp. Awarded 'Approved Supplier' Status From DIVX
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--Rainmaker Digital Pictures Corp. ("Rainmaker" or "The Company") is pleased to announce that the Company's New Media division has successfully delivered an initial order of Divx-encoded DVD titles to Richmond, Virginia-based DIVX Entertainment ("DIVX"), creators of the new Divx home video system. Rainmaker is also expected to provide encoding services for numerous additional titles for Divx in the coming months.
"Rainmaker has demonstrated a consistently high level of technical quality and customer service," said Geoffrey Tully, senior ice president, production services at Divx Entertainment. "I anticipate that we will be sending a substantial number of titles to Rainmaker for Divx encoding in the coming months, and we look forward to working with Rainmaker over the long term."
An enhancement to DVD players, the Divx system is designed to offer consumers the superior audio and video quality of DVD combined with unprecedented convenience and viewing flexibility at rental prices. The Divx system allows consumers to purchase a specially encrypted movie disc, similar in size and appearance to today's audio CD or DVD discs. The purchase price of the movie disc includes a 48 hour viewing period, which begins when the consumer inserts the disc into a Divx player and pushes the play button, be it on the day of purchase, the next week or even months later. Discs can be paused, stopped and played multiple times during the viewing period. Divx- equipped players will play all standard DVD discs, but the lower- cost Divx discs that will be available for purchase cannot be played on standard DVD players. Additional viewing periods, including an option to convert a disc to unlimited viewing on Divx players registered to a consumer's account, can be purchased through the Divx player.
To play on the Divx system, movies must be specially encoded through a customized authoring process. Rainmaker is one of the authoring facilities selected by Divx to provide encoding services. Currently, Divx is creating a sizeable library of Divx-ready movies in order to be able to offer consumers a wide selection of Divx titles.
In addition to ongoing Divx work, Rainmaker's New Media division continues to provide authoring and encoding services to a variety of other DVD clients at both its Vancouver and Burbank facilities.
