There is a whole new class of switches coming which are packet router switches and these will form the new backbone for the telephone stuff as well. It also will treat IP addresses as "phone numbers" and allow switching to occur on IP addresses so that when you have these interconnected IP packets, it just looks up your address and connects you anywhere you go. Known by the technical community as "mobile IP".

Once these get out there, connecting anything to anything will be a reality.

As for the Sprint thing, once you convert voice to packet it goes most anywhere, it looks like this is the plan along with these new switch routers. Buying a low cost voice compression device at Radio shack is a reality today, as your phone (Qualcomm brand of course!!) does PureVoice (xxx-celp = QCELP = PureVoice) and sends it out today. PureVoice can also be gotten in Eudora products for voice mail attachments and is already a voice compression and decompression engine. Cost today is (I think??) $49. Not sure because I never buy it, I just get it on my computer in my office.
