Cache SRAM Price Blowout -- More Suppliers, Weaker Demand

By Anthony Cataldo

San Mateo, Calif.- Already hard hit by oversupply, prices of 1-Mbit
synchronous burst SRAMs in 32-Kx32 configurations have dropped by
two- thirds in just the past few weeks, according to suppliers scrambling
to unload excess inventory.

Suppliers and analysts said last week that prices of 32-Kx32 cache
SRAMs have dropped to the $5 range, a reduction of $10 from mid-
January. Prices were hovering in the range of $20 to $25 in
December, but a flurry of new suppliers and lack of demand from PC
manufacturers have caused tags to fall hard.

Customers that paid $15 for a 32-Kx32 SRAM three weeks ago were
paying less than $5 last week, according to Sherry Garber, principal at
Phoenix-based Semico Research.
