The amount of local frame-buffer memory storage needed depends mostly on screen resolutions and color depth, said Carrell Killebrew, director of mobile marketing at S3 Inc., which plans to start shipping its MXi mobile device with embedded DRAM this year. At 1,024 x 768 resolution with 16-bit color, between 5 and 6 Mbytes are needed to accommodate the front, back and z-buffers, Killebrew said. Roughly 3 Mbytes are needed for an 800 x 600 resolution displaywith 16-bit color. For 640 x 480 games with an 8-bit pixel depth, 2 Mbytes are sufficient, he said.
