XDSL will be huge, and it has been a long time in the making. CPQ, Intel, MSFT and a few other key players have been the drivers for this in the PC space but everyone will benefit. SWBell just started offering ADSL service in my area and I bought in to check it out. Interesting, NO new wiring was needed, the signal 'rides' on existing copper pairs so I didn't even have to drill another hole in the wall. The link is 1.5 Megabaud (i.e 10 times faster than ISDN and 50 times faster than 33K modems).
What I had previously found with ISDN was that I was limited by web traffic and site server performance, and with ADSL this is even more obvious, but on those rare occasions when a site has the bandwidth the results are hot. Also it's nice to click that 'T1' box on the streaming video, ADSL is as fast as T1.
The real future of ADSL is signaled by outfits like SPRINT which just announced internal conversion of all of their systems to handle this new medium. Internally SPRINT estimates that it will cut their cost to deliver long distance services by 70%. Combined services like FAX, Inet and multiple standard phone lines are all possible, just like on T1. That's why the Bells were resisting, it's money out of their pockets but technology marches on and they finally decided to get on the train rather than be left at the station.
BTW CPQ has committed to have 100% of presarios ADSL capable by the fall product line.
