Yes Paul. Indeed Gene Amdahl was the chief Architect of IBM's S-360 Series of mainframes. As I recall he left the company when IBM refused to adopt his next generation design for IBM mainframes. Amdahl Inc. therefore was born in 1973, or 74, when he decided to go it alone. Unfortunately for Gene, his timing was terrible. The market was going through a deep correction at the time and his ability to raise capital was severely hampered. He eventually had to look to Japan's Fujitsu for that capital and years later was credited with advancing Japan's mainframe architecture technology considerably.
