I would think it was less contrarian merely because it represents a cross-section of people who are more in tune with the market.

I am a 15 year member of AAII. Members are canvassed each week for opinion and this opinion is noted in Barron's amongst other opinions. The AAII reading is not presumed to be a contrary one, due to the nature of the subscriber base.

That is to say, the base is supposedly more market oriented than the general public.
