Cable modem (which carries data over the coaxial cable used for TV) is interesting, but there are technical limitations that will prevent it from getting the maximum data throughput possible. One problem is that the cable is shared among thousands of subscribers, and when different people want to transmit, their data could collide on the shared cable, like in existing Ethernet LANs. The real technology that will give high speeds to average users is DSL (Digital Subscriber Line -- see adsl.com ) , a standard being pushed by many telephone companies. (This is the technology Sprint was referring to). DSL requires special equipment at both the user's end and at the phone company, but it carries 1.5 Mbps (million bits/second) over conventional copper phone lines.
