Issing in charge of ECB monetary policy-Italy paper 05:07 a.m. Jun 03, 1998 Eastern ROME, June 3 (Reuters) - Bundesbank chief economist Otmar Issing will be in charge of monetary policy at the European Central Bank (ECB), Italian newspapers reported on Wednesday.
''The executive committee of the ECB decided in Frankfurt that...Otmar Issing will have full responsibility for monetary policy,'' business daily Il Sole 24 Ore said.
Italy's Tommaso Padoa Schioppa will be in charge of payment systems and external relations, while ECB President Wim Duisenberg will personally oversee personnel appointments, according to Turin daily La Stampa.
Members of the ECB board met for the first time on Tuesday to prepare for the first full council meeting, expected to be called on June 9.
As well as Duisenberg, Issing and Padoa Schioppa, the board also comprises Finland's Sirkka Hamalainen, Spain's Domingo Solans and France's Christian Noyer.
The ECB in Frankfurt had no comment on the Italian press reports.
