Issing in charge of ECB monetary policy-Italy paper
05:07 a.m. Jun 03, 1998 Eastern
ROME, June 3 (Reuters) - Bundesbank chief economist Otmar Issing will be
in charge of monetary policy at the European Central Bank (ECB), Italian
newspapers reported on Wednesday.

''The executive committee of the ECB decided in Frankfurt that...Otmar
Issing will have full responsibility for monetary policy,'' business
daily Il Sole 24 Ore said.

Italy's Tommaso Padoa Schioppa will be in charge of payment systems and
external relations, while ECB President Wim Duisenberg will personally
oversee personnel appointments, according to Turin daily La Stampa.

Members of the ECB board met for the first time on Tuesday to prepare
for the first full council meeting, expected to be called on June 9.

As well as Duisenberg, Issing and Padoa Schioppa, the board also
comprises Finland's Sirkka Hamalainen, Spain's Domingo Solans and
France's Christian Noyer.

The ECB in Frankfurt had no comment on the Italian press reports.
