This is what I'm doing.. short changing the shorts:

Borrowed from Yahoo thread, makes sense to me and costs nothing.

This first part describes how short sales work
e-analytics.com

This is someone's solution to limiting the use of their stock for
that purpose:

"We as a collective group can fight the shorts by several methods
one of which is, if you are long on this stock call your broker and have your shares held in your name so that your broker can not loan your shares. if your broker happens to be the one loaning out all or most of these shares and you effectivly take them from the Float your broker would call for the shorters to cover by buying them at market prices. the simple combination of short covering and smaller float along with some New buying interest will drive the price up. daytraders will help escalate demand in an upward price run."
