*AV*-I have a great deal of respect for Katherine and her analysis of the situation. Since Lithography is my area of expertise and forte', I gladly defer to Katherine's opinion in the deposition films area.

NVLS is a great top notch company and I would love to see it succeed over the 500 lb. gorilla, AMAT. NVLS has always been the biggest thorn in AMAT's side and it is very possible NVLS has a better mouse trap. Given that statement, you have to understand there is more than enough room for both of them to succeed. Success for NVLS will be more dramatic than for AMAT because of the relative size and diversity of the AMAT product line relative to that of NVLS.

I am no fan of AMAT but they seemed to have people beleive they can be all things to anyone. That is why I really favor a merger of NVLS, LRCX and KLAC to create an entity that could very well put AMAT into its place. You can almost bet the farm that NVLS will do everything possible to help LRCX develop the necessary etch tools to process the copper films NVLS produces. This would be a great 1-2 punch to AMAT's bottom line.

We are about 5-6 weeks away from SEMICON WEST where I expect some dramtic announcements and new product introductions. Like last year, I will be going to SEEMICON WEST (this time for a 3 days) and crawl over all the equipment booths and equipment. I hope to get a good heads up as to how each company will emerge form this downturn.

Not to straddle the fence but we may be talking about the Avis and Hertz of copper deposition here. The edge still goes to AMAT because they will try to deliver both sides (Deposition and Etch) of the process and not have to rely on an alliance for the other half of the equation. That does not say that NVLS might have the technologically superior copper deposition process. But with the limited data available and being specific to the actual deposition process, I defer to and support Katherine's opinion.
