United Airlines sees profit in Asia in 98
NEW YORK, June 3 (Reuters) - United Airlines expects to be profitable in Asia in 1998 despite economic woes in the region that have eroded airline travel, UAL Corp. President John Edwardson said Wednesday.
Edwardson said United has cut about 12 percent of its capacity in Asia in response to less demand, with most of the cuts focused in Japan and Korea.
By cutting capacity, United has kept load factors on its Asian flights at year-ago levels, he said.
''We're going to be profitable in the Pacific this year,'' Edwardson said in a speech Wednesday before the New York Financial Writers' Association.
Edwardson noted that although economic problems in Asia have decreased leisure travel out of Japan, business travel from that country remains strong.
United, owned by UAL Corp., is the largest U.S. carrier in Asia, while Northwest Airlines (NWAC - news) has the biggest presence in Japan.
