Urology Group Bans Exhibitor for Selling Viagra at Meeting

San Diego, June 2 (Bloomberg) -- The American Urological
Association banned a pharmacy company from its annual meeting in
San Diego, saying it was illegally selling Pfizer Inc.'s
blockbuster impotence drug Viagra.

The association closed down an exhibit run by San Diego-
based University Compounding Co., charging the pharmacy company
with illegally selling Viagra at the gathering of some 15,000
physicians.

''This is against FDA regulations and the rules of the
American Urological Association. We just can't tolerate that,''
said Martin Resnick, the association's secretary.

Resnick said he suspected University Compounding was selling
the impotence drug to physicians visiting from overseas, where
it's not yet approved for sale, who were attending the largest-
ever meeting of urologists.

Black markets for the drug have developed in many countries,
where impotence sufferers are eager to try a product that's been
the focus of unprecedented media attention. It sells for $30 a
pill in Israel, more than three times its price in the U.S., and
customs officials in South Korea require Viagra users to sign a
declaration saying it's for their personal use.

Officials at University Compounding couldn't be reached to
comment. The company's answering machine said it operates the
first U.S. ''retail center'' specializing in impotence
treatments.
