Hi Alex
Mahathir sees talk on single Asia currency 'later'

TOKYO, June 4 (Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Thursday he
expects ''serious consideration'' will eventually be given to the idea of a single Asian currency, but
indicated it will not be soon.

''At some stage there will be talk and even serious consideration of the need for an Asian common
currency,'' Mahathir said, answering questions after a speech to a Tokyo symposium.

But he said it would take a long time and ''a lot of argument'' to talk through such a concept.

In the meantime, he suggested that ''other ways'' be considered. Mahathir has recently said that
Southeast Asian nations are considering forming a trade-weighted basket of currencies to reduce
their reliance on major currencies such as the dollar.
