But in theory, if there are 100 legitimate shares but 300 have been illegally shorted, there is no way that all 300 of those shorted shares can be matched up with real ones because there just aren't enough to go around.


(Please indulge my excursion here into the world of "what if". Chances are that there is a straight answer to this somewhere that I am overlooking.)
