Lucent unveils 'city' fiber CBS MarketWatch - Thu Jun 04 16:41:57 1998 Internet services at lower prices seen MURRAY HILL, N.J. (CBS.MW) -- Lucent Technologies said it has developed an optical fiber that will enable telecommunications service providers to deliver Internet and other digital services at a cheaper price. Lucent (LU) said its AllWave Fiber is the first fiber specifically designed for metropolitan networks. Through the fiber, Lucent expects service providers in cities to deliver multimedia, Internet and video-on-demand services at reduced costs to customers. The stock gained on Thursday. Lucent's AllWave Fiber, which provides 50 percent more usable wavelengths than average fiber, will also be combined with another product that will allow local phone service providers to transmit information over longer distances with less of a cost. cbs.marketwatch.com o~~~ O
