FWIW my take on Symbol's intentions.

The real truth is that Symbol could never design a decent handheld computer on their own.ÿ Their own line of handhelds was purchased about nine years ago from a company in California called MSI.ÿ Telxon and NORAND had much better computers and programmers but since Symbol had the bar code scanner patents locked up they got royalties from these guys.ÿ And thus Symbol could offer lower prices on their own computers.ÿ I saw the wireless handheld that Symbol introduced at SCANTECH last November (designed in NY) and it was junk.ÿ Telxon had a killer JAVA based handheld computer introduced this spring that beat even Symbol's flagship 4600 device in speed, memory and connectivity.ÿ Symbol needs a way to grow and handhelds is the way to do it with wireless connectivity and apps.ÿ The bar codes patents will die in a few years and so will the royalties.ÿ Symbol's 2D bar code technology is becoming obsolete before it even takes off.

Just a thought.
