First Single-Box, High-Speed, Turn-Key Solution for Internet and Corporate Network Access Over Existing Copper Wire
SUPERCOMM '98, June 9-11, Atlanta, GA, Booth # 4019
LAWRENCE, Mass. and LOS GATOS, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Interspeed, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brooktrout Technology (Nasdaq: BRKT), and FlowPoint Corporation, an international provider of remote access networking products, today announced that they will demonstrate a turn-key campus/in- building DSL solution at SUPERCOMM, June 9-11, 1998 in Atlanta, Georgia, Booth #4019. Targeted at ISPs, CLECs and privately owned facilities, the campus/in- building solution incorporates a new generation of carrier-class Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solutions including Interspeed's five port Ethernet Switch Module (SM01/02), Interspeed's 16 port HDSL Module (LM01) within Interspeed's System 500, and the FlowPoint 2200 customer premise router. This is the first single-box DSL solution that addresses the need for a data communications platform which supports existing copper wiring within multi- tenant buildings, high-rise or campus environments.
Internet Service Providers and corporate/campus IT managers can install a single Interspeed System 500 unit in a central location within a building or campus. A FlowPoint 2200 is then installed at the office/tenant locations. Existing copper telephone wiring is used to connect the FlowPoint 2200 to the main system. The result is a sensible and profitable investment because it utilizes a smaller footprint design, is simpler to install and manage, and delivers large cost-savings over multi-unit solutions. This new solution provides several benefits:
-- Eliminates the need for individual businesses to pay surcharges to the local loop provider for access to the Internet or to corporate offices;
-- Leverages existing telephone lines within a building or between campus offices to build a high-speed data communications network;
-- Maintains an intelligent and secure network at the customer locations;
-- Utilizes a single solution for the service deployed;
-- Provides tenants with Internet and corporate network access at speeds up to 1.168 Mbps;
-- Lower overall cost of ownership per user/per port.
"A partnership between our organizations offers end-to-end capabilities that benefit both the service provider and the end user like no other solution available today," said Steve Ide, president of Interspeed. "Most other DSL offerings on the market require multiple pieces of equipment to create a service solution. This may include multiplexors, switches and routers. Interspeed's unique solution supports all the required functionality in a single chassis."
"In-building and enterprise services are a leading source of DSL deployment right now," said Paula Reinman, Director of Consulting at TeleChoice, Inc., a leading telecommunications management consulting firm. "Our research shows that ease of use and installation, interoperability and affordability are key requirements for acceptance of DSL into the small business market. TeleChoice is pleased to see solutions that address these needs."
Unlike current DSL offerings, Interspeed's System 500 is an advanced single-system solution specifically designed as a data-oriented platform for service providers who plan to offer their clients broadband communications. The System 500 supports up to three HDSL modules (LM01) each offering 16 ports of 1.168 Mbps symmetrical connections for a total of 48 concurrent connections and a single Ethernet module offering four individual 10Base-T Ethernet connections and one 100Base-TX (SM01) or one 100Base-FL (SM02) connection. Interspeed's System 500, enhanced for IP switching and routing, includes; Layer 2 & 3 IP switching, IP routing, RIP1, RIP2, OSPF, and BGP4 routing protocols, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), individual VPN-based administration security, and device management using SNMP, Telnet and via a local connection using a command line interface. Also included in the System 500 is Speedview, Interspeed's embedded HTTP server that provides secure device and network admini! stration using a standard Web browser.
The FlowPoint 2200 is a powerful and versatile symmetric DSL (SDSL) router that provides all the computers on the tenant Local Area Network (LAN) with DSL access through a single connection. The FlowPoint 2200 has a built-in Ethernet hub creating a single box solution for small offices. The hub has four ports that can be configured for a four-user LAN, or an unlimited-user LAN supporting over 100 users. The FlowPoint 2200 is easy to install and use while providing a rich feature set including Network Address Translation (NAT) and Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP). The FlowPoint 2200 was reviewed in the April 27, 1998 issue of PC Week, a leading corporate computing newspaper. According to the technical product review: "In PC Week Labs' tests, we were able to install the FlowPoint 2200 on our test network in less than 5 minutes ..."
"Combining Interspeed's System 500 single-box solution with easy to use, small business routers will greatly simplify the ISP and complex owner's task of offering DSL solutions to campus and in-building offices," said Chuck Waggoner, president of FlowPoint. "These offices will now have shared access to symmetrical rates from 384 kbps to 1.1 Mbps for Internet and intranet access, video conferencing, distance learning, multimedia streaming, research, and large file sharing."
Pricing and Availability
List price for the System 500 configured with one HDSL Line Module (LM01) and one Ethernet Switch Module (SM01 or SM02) is $15,500. This configuration includes one FlowPoint 2200. Additional FlowPoint 2200 CPE routers list for $649 to $795. The solution will be available in the 3rd Quarter of 1998 through Interspeed's direct sales force and through FlowPoint.
