elk: Following SS7 lately, I was glad to see someone post about it. So, exactly...................WHAT IS IT?

In its simplest form, SS7 is a common channel out-of-band signaling system that evolved from and became the replacement for multi-frequency in-band telephony signaling systems. SS7 is
much more powerful and flexible than the earlier signaling systems due to the fact that it is a message-based system designed to operate on separate digital facilities. This capability has led to
SS7 growing beyond the initial support of voice services to support for ISDN basic supplementary services, data, video, and Intelligent Network database-dependent services. The robust capability of
the SS7 architecture will also serve the needs of the developing multimedia and personal communications services in the future.

ITS IMPORTANCE

SS7 is one of the first steps that moves the traditional telephone network from a series of semi-independent switching centers to a network of computer-controlled highways for the
transportation and management of information of all types.

THE BENEFITS

The principal benefit of SS7 standards have been achieved by defining the technical requirements needed for ""vendors to build equipment and defining the interface requirements sufficiently to achieve interoperability between service providers as well as within a given service provider's network"".
