New TRW Gallium Arsenide Multichip Power Amplifier Modules Deliver Savings and High Performance for Wireless Telecom Applications

REDONDO BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1998--TRW GaAs Telecom Products today introduced four high-power and one medium-power gallium arsenide (GaAs) multichip power amplifier modules for applications in local multipoint distribution services (LMDS) systems, point-to-point radios, and very small aperture terminals (VSATs) for Ka-band satellite communications.

"Modules cut parts counts, while providing higher levels of functional integration and lowering overall cost for system developers," said TRW Vice President David B. Vandervoet. A single module, containing a number of TRW's monolithic millimeter-wave integrated circuits (MMICs), requires fewer components and is smaller than equivalent "hybrid" modules.

TRW's new line of power amplifier modules operate in the 27 GHz to 31 GHz and 37 GHz to 40 GHz frequency bands, portions of the radio spectrum only now coming into widespread use for telecommunications. TRW is developing additional modules for the 21 GHz to 24 GHz and 24 GHz to 27 GHz bands.

"In addition to power amplifier modules, TRW expects soon to introduce other modules, such as fully integrated transceivers, that implement even higher levels of MMIC integration," Vandervoet added.

Volume Production Makes Module Price Competitive

TRW has priced the power amplifier modules at less than $1000 for orders of more than 1000. The modules will be on display at the SuperComm '98 trade show in Atlanta, June 7 through 11 and at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (known as the IEEE MTTS) show in Baltimore, June 7 through 12.

"The higher levels of integration provided by our MMICs, combined with highly automated module assembly and test at our TRW MilliWave subsidiary, give us the leverage to drive down module prices," said Robert M. VanBuskirk, executive director of TRW GaAs Telecom Products. "As we increase volume and improve manufacturing processes, we expect module prices to drop even further."

TRW's MMIC power amplifier modules include five separate products: the MPA-105 Medium Power Amplifier, and the HPA-111, -113, -114, and -116 High Power Amplifiers. The MPA-105 provides RF output of greater than 20 dBm in the 38 GHz band. The HPA modules provide RF outputs of one watt or greater in their respective frequency bands.

Additional information on TRW GaAs MMICs, modules, and product introductions is available at trw.com. -0- TRW is an industry leader in the design, development and production of low-cost gallium arsenide MMICs and MMIC-based modules for worldwide markets. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the company provides advanced technology products and services for the automotive, space and defense, and information technology markets worldwide. TRW's 1997 sales totaled nearly $12 billion (including the recent BDM acquisition).
