appro, re head trimming An ion beam is used to trim the head to the proper design width. As track density increases, accurate head width becomes more important. Too wide a head would interfere with adjacent tracks, too narrow would yield a read signal that has lower amplitude (therefore lower S/N ratio) than desired. Head trimming also helps avoid the problem of misalignment between the two pole tips. GM
