TT, >>>" With a 400MHz P-II system from NEC costing under $2,300, who in the right of mind would settle for anything else?"<<<
I saw a 400 MHz PII, 64 MB RAM (not sure if SDRAM or not), 7 GB HD, 32x CDROM, 4MB Video card, 56 K Modem, Win 95, etc. in the SJ Mercury News business section for $1,599 (no monitor). I bought a Sony 17" at Fry's (Multiscan 200GS) for $599 about a month ago. So, including (an excellent) monitor, you can get a complete 400 MHz system for ~ $2,200. The boxmaker was a mom and pop shop here in the valley. You have to know who you are going to, but some of these mom and pops are excellent, and, if you do have a problem, they are a lot faster to help than a Compaq or Dell.
It seems to me that these fast PII's should start taking back business from the sub $1,000 boxes. They can be as little as $600 more! All it's going to take is one very minor non-killer app, but CPU hog, and the sub 1,000's may be on their knees.
