Franz and Rudedog,

Something Rudedog forgot to mention is also the cost advantage of Alpha over Intel. Cost advantage? you say. Most definitely. The only reason Alpha is more expensive is the low volumes. Once people realize and accept the fact that Alpha can do anything an Intel chip can at twice the speed or greater you'll see volume increase and costs go down. IMHO I think Compaq buying DEC for their Services is a smoke screen and the real reason was to get control of Alpha. If DEC(Compaq) can get the quantities up there should be be tremendous potential here. The numbers I've seen (can't remenber where) show that Alpha has a lower transistor count than a Pentium II (I think maybe even Pentium MMX) so if they can get some Alpha acceptance in the market we'll see it really take off.
