Thanks for the previous thoughtful response.

Sybase is doing consulting, but is missing the long term engagements that are associated with back office applications (GL, AP, AR, Mfg, OE) because until recently none of the package vendors were able to successfully port to Sybase and even now, Sybase doesn't get to prime those engagements.

Actually there are several large scale engagements that SYBS is involved in. I conceed they may not be the primary contractor, but the revenue stream still is in the $1M plus range. As for the package vendors... as the number of SYBS installs increases so will the services associated. Again I grant you that is relatively recent history that such vendors were able to use SYBS given their RLL oriented approach.

related to consulting.... it was a relatively small component of overall revenue for Sybase. Sybase was principally paired with Anderson Consulting in my region for consulting and did very well through them

Times have changed and your information is showing its age. Services now provides a significant chunk of change and is growing.

Sybase isn't going to be able to pay big bonuses to these people if they aren't making their numbers and I know how the comp plans work.

Really... everyone I work with is still on pace for their 15-20% kicker. Has been that way for years... Performance and leadership gets rewarded.

How many Sybase customers have migrated all the way through the crap point releases from 10 on to get to 11.9?

Many... support for pre-system 10 has been halted and maybe even for that version. I would need to check in order to be sure.

This ongoing release cycle of rushed betas into the hands of an unsuspecting public (of which Oracle is equally quilty) doesn't mean anything to current revenues.

In the case of SYBS, the release cycle has produced very significant results. Customer making the move are seeing order of magnitude performance gains with little or no rewrite! I can't say the same for ORCL.

Whether you like Jolt or not, there is an undeniable future revenue stream there that is going to be attractive to investors, and the fact that they are positioned to offer additional services and products around it makes it even more so. I wasn't aware that Sybase was offering a full featured XA compliant TP monitor these days?

Still they will not benefit from the immediate third tier introduced from the adoption of Internet technology. They simply do not have the technical capabilities to compete. They may however continue to contribute to the N-tier environement between the Internet tier and the database. The point here is that they will not be communicating directly with thin clients given their current (and projected) offerings.

If you want to take this further perhaps we should move over to the SYBS thread. Thanks to all the others for the patience.
