"What worries me a bit is that the US Congress is probably a lot less likely to stand by a US company in a standards squabble than the Europeans are likely to stand by theirs. We have this ideology, at least, of open competition. Protectionism is a deeply ingrained instinct over there."

The first part is true. But the second part is relative. From NZ point of view, USA is not in favor of free trade. If only it were true. Protectionism is a deeply ingrained instinct in the USA too. And about half the people here are in favor of the Albanian model too. The other half prefer the North Korean model!! No, just kidding, but about half the people are quite Albanian. I think the same true of the USA.

But watch the USA defend Qualcomm IPR like a wild gorilla. That's the main thing. Al Gore and co like Qualcomm. Don't mention Janet Reno! She'll order the wicked Qualcomm monopoly given away to the standards club of freeloaders.

Now, back to catching up!

Tero - I have made prediction after prediction, with numbers attached. Nearly all correct. For example, 7.34159m cdmaOne subscribers by end 97. Right on the button! Qualcomm trading ranges. Sell GSTRF $72, buy Qcom $48. Bill Frezza was totally wrong, now totally gone! Ericsson was wrong and now trying to steal IPR.
