Ah, you're misinterpreting the signs again... come here, I'll educate you...

If you look at the other groups, especially the bit.listserv.ibm-main and
comp.lang.asm370, the cobol, cics, VM groups, you'll see that the traffic has
increased by an order of magnitude in the last couple years. Groups that had
one or two posts a day are running in the dozens or hundreds of articles.

The nature of the articles has changed too... a year or two ago, those groups
were full of idle chatter of the good old days, old foggers reminiscing about
gear driven, belt driven or in some cases oil driven computers (I'm thinking
about the hydraulics in 1960's mainframes).

The articles are desperate cries for help, how do we do this, what's going
on, why doesn't this work? In some cases, the questions reveal that a mainframe
shop has been taken over by Ms Penelope's second grade class... I'm referring
to the recent posts about an MVS systems's JES spool filling up. Is this
something we should worry about? What does it mean? Oh-Kaaaaay... you mean you
don't have anyone who can tell what's in the spool and purge it?

That's like riding in a 747 and hearing the captain say, "Any passengers know
what a whole bunch of flashing red lights mean? ...dang, where's my '747 for
Dummies' book?" and in the background a robot voice is yelling "Pull-up!
Pull-up!"

So yes, to those of us who know something about computers, the signs of the
disaster are clear, the technical newsgroups are indeed SCREAMING about Y2K. To
the credit of the REAL computer experts out there, the question on the JES spool
was calmly answered, ...here are the console commands you need and what they do.

Come on Brad, I don't expect you to morph into Frank, Scott, or Paul Milne
(really, one syllable?) but at least come over to the middle. You're about to
be overrun by history.

cory hamasaki Here's a prediction, by day 500, Brad and Don either vanish or go
milne. And it's not because of the charm and wit in c.s.y2k,
574 days it'll be because the signs, tripwires, panic will be obvious.
