Yes It seems most systems are quoted without monitor. My $2500 machine was without monitor. ( the 21 in monitor I want is $1000+)

You're right the comparison is not exactly right. You would have to add about $300 for an OS, sound card and modem to make it a valid comparison. I can't see any value to the other software, it is mostly limited edition buy me if you want more kind of software. I also do not have a real OS IMO as it only will work on this machine. Microsoft agreements allow me to move software as long as I delete it from a previous machine. I can't do that with the Compaq load.

Also, what about the fact that I can't reuse the case, sound card, modem, video as it is all proprietary stuff? Comparing is like apples and oranges.

I found it interesting that one could have highend components with a lot of upgrade potential for about a grand. I see value in open architecture.

It would be a different kind of low cost machine than is available from Compaq today. The $1000 machines I have seen from the big box makers have very limited upgrade potential.

The comparison to my machine was an after thought.

Its time for the 120 MB floppy.
