Thread,

I received the following letter from Senator Torricelli, to whom I wrote in support of Microsoft prior to Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing:

"Thank you for contacting me to express your support for Bill Gates and the Microsoft Corporation. I appreciate your interest in this matter, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you know, the Microsoft Corporation is widely credited with changing the state of computer technology. Many companies, however, have recently alleged that Microsoft's rise has come at the expense of smaller competing computer companies. Since its inception, Microsoft Corporation has maintained a commanding market share over its competitors in the industry. As a result, many companies, like Netscape, have made numerous complaints to the Federal Trade Commisssions about a lack of competition in the computer software industry.

Recently, Mr. Gates and a panel of computer software CEO's attended a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which I am a member, to discuss their perspective on the state of competition in the computer industry. This engaging dialogue was beneficial and offered great insight into the current situation. As a supporter of free competition, I understand the concerns of smaller computer companies that are continually jockeying for market share. However, I am not yet convinced that further regulation of this innovative and robust industry will be good for the consumer or the American economy in the long run. I will continue to press for vigorous enforcement of the anti-trust laws already on the books, and I will be sure to keep your views in mind should new legislation come before the Senate.

Again, thank you for contacting me and alerting me to your concerns. In the future, do not hesitate to contact me again on this or any issue which is of concern to you.

....

Signed
Robert G. Torricelli (NJ)

Bob is from my state. He will get my votes in the foreseeable future.

I would suggest those who feel strongly about this issue write to their senators and congressmen, especially if they are on the appropriate committees.
