re: "What I mean is, shouldn't this thread focus on SGI's business fundamentals?...Like: P/E, cash flow, head count, expansion plans, assimilation of acquired companies, targets for acquisition, takeover rumors?.

re: I don't see that arguing about the merits of NT versus IRIX to be beneficial to shareholders

The "technobable" of which you speak is indeed a business fundamental - one might argue much more so that the typical business analogs as P/E, ROI, etc. These measurements have very limited value outside of letting an MBA think he got his money's worth from graduate school. Look at how few mutual fund managers - who use the measures you list - are able to beat the S&P 500 over the long term. So, while I wouldn't invest without reviewing these measures, neither would I invest soley *because* of them.

The merits or faults of the products offered by SGI will ultimately determine its fate. Not only is such discussion proper in this context, its the most usefull discussion for the long-term investor. I hope for my sake the users of the technology will continue to report on its capabilities in this forum so that I might better understand the products.

People don't buy the marketing, or the balance sheet. They buy the ultimate business fundamental. They buy the product.

p.s. If SGI needs to pour some money into marketing, they could always pick up a couple of the gurus disposed of by the cereal manufacturers.
