I think I have some correction to make on McData's FC director. I was drawing pictures of network configurations in my head this morning and this is what I came up with.<g>

1. Since it is a FC product, it should have the inherent distance advantage. In other words, it can have connections extending to whatever FC standard allows using fiber optics cables.

2. Since it is a "director", the nature of it is "connection oriented". In McData's press release, it is making comparison to an "arbitrated loop". It claims that the "director" has better performance by eliminating "arbitration". There are three ways that FC devices use to connect to each other. They are "point to point", " arbitrated loop", "fabric(switch)". My interpretation of this thing is a "hybrid private arbitrated loop".

..Hybrid--connections pre-defined.
..Private--it cannot extend outside this device(can't scale).
.."arbitrated loop"--actually, it's more like many point to point connections pre-defined. Lack of a better explanation, this is what I came up with.

IMO, their price point is way too high. A 32-port or 64-port switch would beat this device hands down in terms of flexibility and price performance. This "director" cannot scale period and is expensive.
