Packard Bell Maintains Number One Ownership Position by a Wide
Margin

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 1998--In Media Metrix' semi
annual Top 10 ranking of Windows PC installed base, Compaq ranks first
in newest average age (2.6 years) among all home PCs, while IBM ranks
first among the oldest average home PCs. Packard Bell maintains its
leadership in overall installed base with a 19.6% share of the PC
market -- or 6.9 million PCs out of 35.3 million total in US
households. IBM ranks second in installed base with 6.9% of the market
or 2.5 million PCs and Compaq ranks third overall in installed base
with 2.3 million PCs, or 6.5% of the total market.

"Our data show there are over 8 million PCs that are more than
five years old. This translates into a major opportunity for PC
manufacturers to replace those computers," says Bruce Ryon, General
Manager and Chief Technology Analyst of the Technology Division of
Media Metrix, Inc. "Aggressive pursuers of this market include
newcomer Sony, which has the second largest installed base of PCs
under one year old - with 277 thousand PCs."
