Once we were booting BeOS from the hard disk, the system was ready in 8
seconds. The same system took 86 seconds to boot Windows NT and 37
seconds for Windows 95.
We detected evidence of similar efficiency throughout the system; we had
difficulty finding any application with a perceptible launch delay or lag
time. NetPositive, the bundled Web browser; StyledEdit, the bundled text
editor; Terminal, the included Unix bash shell; and other applications all
launched in the blink of an eye. We were even able to select half a dozen
movie files and hit Enter, launching them all simultaneously, without a
perceptible delay. One of the two processors could be toggled off via the
included Pulse application to test performance with half the horsepower.
Our six movies barely slowed down when we shut down one CPU. Granted,
some of this performance can be attributed to the dual processors. But
operation under BeOS was much faster than when running parallel
applications under Windows 95 or NT.
